Translation from Italian to Albanian by Muharrem Kuti

The poetry book “The Amplitude of Probabilities” by the contemporary Italian poet Laura Garavaglia, translated into the Albanian language by the distinguished poet and translator Jeton Kelmendi, introduces us to the author’s inclination to deliberately try to write contemporary poetry with a scientific poetic vocabulary.

To the extent that we have the poems of this book in hand, most of them have scientific vocabulary. For example, the titles of some of the poems like “Fibonacci Numbers,” “Group Theory,” “Zeta Function,” “The Fury of Numbers,” and some others, have mathematical vocabulary.

While looking at some of the verses from some of the poems, such as “/Built on numbers/ Numbers were bright stars/ Numbers and tiles/ Numbers of notes/ The fury of numbers was an abyss of freedom/ Between plus and minus/ I like the circulation of the 0 (zero)/ Zero closes the borders again/,” and so on, they show that the author has created a distinguished poetic individuality even through this style of writing. She is quite unique in this regard.

The author Garavaglia writes about the anxiety of the modern world and its concerns. She writes about human preoccupations. Perhaps, if read this way, all of human life is a race for a number. The most powerful ones aim for the number one, the greatest number in the world and of humanity , but they treat others as numbers. For example, prisoners don’t have names, only number identities. Crowds are just a number size. The more numbers you have under your control, the greater you are.

There are people who are just zero. There are people who are minus, just as there are people who are just plus. The value of any contemporary world author coming to the Albanian language is great, because it introduces us to the tendencies of poetry in the world, to innovations, and shows us what topics concern the creator of the Western world and what differences there are between the two literary concepts at home and abroad.

Congratulations to the author Garavaglia on her arrival in the Albanian language and praise to the translator, who is enabling us to get to know authors from the Western world.
